Selecting the right probiotic

Humans

Selecting the right probiotic?

Human consumption of probiotics as food supplements has become very popular. There are many over-the-counter probiotics available and, probably, an equal number of internet sources providing a list of the "best probiotics", causing much confusion. However, probiotics on these lists often appear to be selected on the basis of claimed colony forming units provided (more is better!), number of strains (more is better!) and cost (less is better!), rather than any scientific merit. Such approaches will contribute to inaccurate perceptions of the true effectiveness of probiotics.

We have compiled a comprehensive database of peer-reviewed probiotic studies in humans, particularly randomised controlled trials, including critical appraisals. This database allows us to identify the most appropriate probiotic strain(s) for particular circumstances. For a modest fee (£15/€17/$18.50) to help maintain the database and integrate latest research, we use specific information (e.g. age, gender, situation) to provide a completely independent report proposing the most suitable, evidence-based, probiotic(s). We cannot guarantee benefit as various (individual) factors will influence this but believe that such an approach will help advance the use of appropriate strains and the accurate perception of probiotic effectiveness. This service is available to individuals as well as to healthcare providers.

Please email (guthealthconsultancy@gmail.com) to use the service or for further information. We are developing a webpage to automate the process of information submission and fee payment.

N.B.
In some circumstances, there is insufficient, or inappropriate, scientific evidence to propose a suitable probiotic.
